TOP-AFTFG: After Run Die Procedures

SCOPE: This procedure covers the steps followed with the dies and other tooling after a forging job is complete.

STEP WHO WHEN INFO TO USE WHAT TO DO RESULTS
1 Hammerman and crew Before setting up next job (or as directed by Production Supervisor or Leadman) Hotcell data Take forging dies out of hammer, be sure Production Supervisor or Lead Man is aware of set up. Make sure no parts are left behind the hammer and no billets are left around the furnace. Dies and other tooling out of hammer
2 Die Prep Helper As notified Verbal notification from Production Go to hammer; pull any trim or other tooling out of presses; take dies and other tooling back to Die Prep area (or directly to Die Shop if so directed); take Production Floor Traveler to Die Prep for review. Dies back to Die Prep; Production Floor Traveler forwarded to Die Prep for review
3 Die Prep Team Member After dies cool off Personal experience Open dies up and clean dies and other tooling if needed; contact Die Shop Team Member to inspect dies or tooling; take Production Floor Traveler to Production Supervisor's office for filing. Dies ready for inspection; Production Floor Traveler placed in Production Supervisor's office for filing.
4 Die Shop Team Member As requested to inspect dies or tooling Visual inspection Review overall condition of dies or tooling; look for excessive wear or impression damage; if problems found take notes and contact Die Shop Supervisor. Excessive wear, damage found and reported to Die Shop Supervisor
5 Die Shop Supervisor After a problem (defect or damage) is reported Visual inspection of the defect/damage Make a decision as to disposition and note it in an email to the Engineer assigned to the die in question. Also note it in a daily shift change e-mail. A decision made as to disposition; disposition decision sent via e-mail
6 Engineer*, Die Shop Supervisor After die inspection is complete Visual Inspection Make a Job Order to schedule repairs; if the corrections needed will take less than 24 hours and will be done immediately, a Job Order is not required. When repairs are complete have a Die Prep Team Member make dies or tooling ready for storage. Job Order entered; repairs made; dies or tooling made ready for storage.
7 Die Prep Helper After dies and other tooling are ready for storage By observation Apply plastic coating (or other rust preventive) as needed for outdoor storage to dies and other tooling and return them to proper slot in storage racks; log any dies or tooling location in log sheet; also enter in Tooling System. Dies protected, stored and accounted for
*An Engineer can make decisions for repairs in the same capacity as the Die Shop Supervisor when called upon.
