TOP-DSHOP: Die Shop

SCOPE: This procedure covers in-house die and trimmer make-ready and/or repairs. It is divided into three sections, any of which may pertain to a given situation.
STEP WHO WHEN INFO TO USE WHAT TO DO RESULTS
PREPARATION OF NEW DIES
1 Anyone in Die Shop New die arrives from die sinker Dies, tooling, print, die layout Fully inspect die and related tooling, note any deviations on the Die Improvement Sheet. Send Die Improvement Sheet to engineering. Die and tooling inspected
2 Die Shop Supervisor, Die Shop Leadman, Engineer, Die Man After die received by Die Man Personal observation, approved forging print or die layout Visually inspect die; mark up areas that need to be modified to match print; (or) verbally give instructions for changes to Die Shop Leadman; Make sure any requested changes are added to Die Improvement Sheet Die visually inspected for improvements, marked up die or verbal instructions to Die Shop Leadman
3 Die Shop Leadman or Die Man Upon instructions from person inspecting die Marked up die; instructions from person inspecting die; possibly marked up part or die print Make changes to die as instructed and prepare to add stamping New die now ready; stamping needed
4 Die Shop Leadman or Die Man As die is ready for stamping Approved forging print Stamp die according to approved forging print Die stamped
5 Die Shop Leadman, Die Man or QC Inspector After die stamped Approved forging print Visually inspect die stamping Die properly stamped
6 Die Shop Supervisor Die is ready for production Visual inspection, Die Man or Die Shop Leadman approval Change Job Order to closed in M2M. Job Order closed

REWORK DIES/TRIM TOOLING (IN DIE SHOP)

1 Any manager, typically Production Leadman, QC Inspector, hammerman or Die Shop Supervisor, Production Supervisor Upon determining need for forge die/ tooling repair Visual observation, info from hammerman, Quality Control department, own judgment; Job Order Mark up areas to be modified or repaired (or) verbal instructions to Die Shop Leadman (or) initiate Job Order Need for repair determined; instructions to Die Shop Leadman or Die Man; Job Order initiated or requested
2 Die Shop Leadman, or Die Man Upon receipt of repair instructions Marked up die/tooling; verbal info; Job Order Make repairs/changes to die/tooling as instructed Die/tooling repaired as instructed
3 Die Shop Leadman, or Die Man Upon receipt of die/tooling Die Improvement Slip; own judgment If repair affects future die sinks, complete Die Improvement Sheet, giving full details of changes made; (see TOP-IMPTL ) Completed Die Improvement Sheet filed for future re-sinks
4 Die Shop Leadman, or Die Man Repairs complete Personal observation, notification from Die Shop Leadman Notify Production Leadman or Production Supervisor die/tooling is repaired and ready for use Die/tooling ready for production

REWORK DIES/TRIM TOOLING (IN PRODUCTION AREA)

1 Die Shop Supervisor or Leadman, QC Inspector, or hammerman Upon determination of need for die/tooling repair Visual observation, info from hammerman, Quality Control Dept., own judgment Give verbal instructions to Die Shop Leadman, Die Man or Die Trimmer Man for repair Need for repair determined; instructions to Die Shop Leadman, Die Man or Die Trimmer Man
2 Die Man or Die Trimmer Man Upon receipt of repair instructions Verbal information Make repairs/changes to die/tooling as instructed; If this is  a change that effects a resink change,  make Die Improvement Sheet and turn in to Engineering. Die/tooling repaired as instructed
