TOP-PATRN: Patterns

REV: 814/08

SCOPE: This procedure covers the modification and control of patterns (dimensional replica of forging at production temperature made of wood or other material)

PATTERN CREATION & MODIFICATION
STEP WHO WHEN INFO TO USE WHAT TO DO RESULTS
1 Engineer* As required for new die sale or engineering change Forging print, sketch or sample part, etc.; print(s); Approved Vendor List Issue Job Order request to modify the pattern per customer requests. Pull prints from the Viewer per TOP-PRINT; for new die sale, send pattern to scanning source; go to Step 14 only when we get a new die using customer's pattern. Pattern changed to standard and scanned
2 Engineering Assistant Upon receiving Job Order request Job Order request; corresponding emails Issue Job Order to modify pattern per customer request. Job Order issued to make pattern change
3 Die Shop Supervisor Per schedule agreed to with Engineer Forging print, sketch or sample part; Job Order; own judgment Make change to pattern to make part forgeable. Modified pattern
4 Metrologist Within 2 days of return of pattern from any change Forging print, sketch or sample part; information in Item Master Thoroughly inspect dimensions of pattern (typically using CMM) to ensure that they meet what the engineer and customer have specified. For new or modified pattern (where deemed necessary) also measure volume and calculate forging net weight and send to Engineering Assistant for filing; mark die number, date and revision on pattern ("Revision" refers to pattern creation date, or last modification). Metrologist's report with out-of- tolerance dimensions highlighted and returned to the Engineer along with pattern
5 Engineer Upon receiving Water Weight form Water Weight Enter water weight; estimated gross weight and material size in Item Master of M2M Program; route to Engineering Assistant. Water weight and material size estimated; entered in Item Master of M2M Program; routed to Engineering Assistant
6 Engineer IF PATTERN IS DISAPPROVED INTERNALLY Metrologist's report, Forging print, sketch or sample part, customer specifications Determine degree of changes needed to pattern. GO BACK TO STEP 2, temporarily filing Metrologist's report in Engineering file
7 Engineer Once pattern approved internally Metrologist's report Notify Engineering Assistant that pattern is ready via Approval Email. Metrologist's report filed; Engineering Assistant notified that pattern is ready to go to customer via email
IF CUSTOMER REFUSES TO DO OWN PATTERN APPROVAL SKIP TO STEP 12
8 Engineering Assistant After receiving notification from Engineer Pattern-for-Approval; Customer Info Mail pattern and cover letter to customer for approval. Cover letter to customer
9 Engineering Assistant Semi-monthly Engineering files, scans and correspondence/emails Check engineering files to be sure approval has not been received; call customers who have not returned pattern approval for 2 weeks; (if approval is further delayed notify the Engineer) upon receipt of approval from customer, add approval information to email and send to Engineer. Pattern not lost at customer; customer approval documented
10 Engineering Assistant Upon receiving pattern back Cover letter back from customer Send e-mail of customer's approval/ disapproval, pattern and cover letter to the Engineer. E-mail notification, pattern, and cover letter to Engineer
11 Engineer Upon receiving pattern back Cover letter from customer Review and file cover letter; determine next step. Cover letter to Engineering File
11a Engineer Pattern approved by customer Cover letter; forging print; sketch or sample; customer specifications Determine degree of changes needed to pattern; go back to Step 1. Decision made as to changes needed
12 Engineer Once pattern fully approved Approved pattern Turn pattern over to Engineering Assistant for storage. Approved pattern ready for storage (typically the pattern is nearly immediately checked back out to be sent to scanning source)
13 Engineering Assistant Upon receiving new pattern New pattern Place pattern into storage area; update the storage list of patterns; close out Job Order. Pattern in controlled storage area; Pattern List kept updated
14 Engineer or other manager As needed to check out pattern (typically to send to scanning source) Pattern Requests to check out pattern from Engineering Assistant. Verbal or written request to check out pattern
15 Engineering Assistant Upon request to check out pattern Forging print, sketch or sample part, customer specifications Verify, to degree needed for intended use, that pattern is accurate to current revision (if pattern is not current, notify the Engineer); be sure die number and current Trinity Forge print revision plus customer's print revision (if any) are marked on pattern; check out. Verified pattern marked with die number and print revision in care of person checking it out*
16 Engineering Assistant At least monthly Pattern List Update Pattern List if needed. Patterns not lost or forgotten
17 Person who has pattern checked out When through with pattern Pattern Return pattern to Engineering Assistant. Pattern back in Engineering Assistant's hands
18 Engineering Assistant As receive pattern back Pattern List Check pattern for obvious damage, then return pattern to controlled storage. Pattern into storage area

* "Engineer" refers to the member of the Engineering Department assigned the die in question. If there is any question as to which Engineer is assigned a particular die, the VP of Quality & Engineering  decides.
