TOP-SECTL:Secondary Tooling Inspection

REV:04/15/09

SCOPE: This procedure covers the inspection and storage of tooling or tooling related casts (dimensional representations of an impression taken by pouring plaster or other material directly into the impression) related to post-forging manipulation of part dimensions including hot or cold.

RESULTS

1 Die Sinker , Die Shop Leadman or Die Shop Helper Upon receiving a newly (re) sunk or questionable hot pad die, re-strike die, or cold coin die Die number on tooling die; own observations Make one cast of each impression for any (re) sink or take actual tooling to Metrology (specified by Engineer); for situations requiring a cast, forward one cast of each impression, including blocker, to Metrology; label each impression cast with die sinker name, die number, Job Order Number (P.O. Number for outside vendors); date, shim and impression (for multi-impression dies). Cast ready for inspection; tooling to Metrology
2 CMM Programmer/Operator Within 2 days of receiving cast or tooling Forging print with Engineering notes on die sink tolerances Thoroughly inspect dimensions of cast (typically using CMM) or actual tooling. CMM Programmer/Operator report, with any out-of-tolerance readings highlighted, returned with cast to Engineer
3 Engineer* If cast or Tooling is disapproved CMM Programmer/Operator Report, forging print Determine degree of changes needed to tooling, report to Engineering Manager. for hot pad die repair; stamp "Reject" on CMM Programmer/Operator Report; temporarily hold CMM Programmer/Operator report unless in own judgment tooling repair is too minor to justify another inspection; destroy disapproved cast and after tooling is corrected go back to step 1. Decision made and executed regarding repairs; "Reject" noted on CMM Programmer/Operator Report
4 Engineering Assistant If cast or Tooling is approved CMM Programmer/Operator Report Stamp "Accept" on CMM Programmer/Operator Report; file Report. "Accept" noted on CMM Programmer/Operator Report; Report in Engineering file
5 Engineering Assistant Once cast or tooling fully approved Cast; tooling Turn cast or tooling (if any) over to Die Shop Leadman Approved cast or tooling ready for storage
6 Die Shop Leadman Upon receiving cast or tooling to store Cast; tooling Verify cast marked with die number, date, die sinker and "HOT PAD DIE", "RE-STRIKE DIE" or "COLD COIN DIE"; store cast in cast cabinet after discarding or marking casts already in cabinet as "OLD HOT PAD DIE", "OLD RE-STRIKE DIE", or "OLD COLD COIN DIE"; store tooling in designated area New cast in cabinet

*"Engineer" refers to the member of the Engineering Department assigned the die in question. If there is any question as to which Engineer is assigned a particular die, the Engineering Manager decides.
