TFTM-TEMP: Forging Temperature Concepts

Taught by: QC Supervisor in association with a Production Supervisor (Foreman) or other person with at least 5 year’s experience in heating and/or forging.

Objective:
bulletLearn the problems associated with overheating (splitting, excessive scale, grain growth, possible field failure of part).
bulletLearn the problems associated with under heating (die wear, low productivity).
bulletBecome familiar with TOP-FTEMP (monitoring and control of forging temperature), including the forging temperature guidelines.
bulletLearn the basics of equipment controls affecting temperature.
bulletLearn the concepts regarding heat buildup during forging.
bulletLearn the differences in heating of carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless and exotics.
bulletBecome familiar with pyrometers and tempil sticks.
bulletGain expertise in visually judging material temperature.

Syllabus:
bulletLaboratory work at forge furnace, heating materials to elevated temperatures and reviewing them visually as well as with the temperature chart, tempil sticks and pyrometer.
bulletOn-the-job training as required to build-up visual judgment.
bulletUnderstanding of on-hands concepts, including verification of the individual’s ability to visually judge material temperature, (this on-hands procedure may be repeated as many times as needed during his work schedule.

Completion: Successful completion of on-hands concepts and sign-off by both teachers that employee understands the material presented.

Notes: The Human Resource Manager may choose to abbreviate the training regimen of individuals with more than 2 years of heating or forging experience, but in no case may the examination be waived.
